In the heart of Vikos-Aoos National Park, just a few kilometers north of the city of Ioannina is the deepest canyon in the world, the Vikos Gorge.
It is truly a miracle of nature, a site of unique ecological importance, where you will be able to find rare flowers and herbs, even wildlife that is hard to find elsewhere in Greece. It is no coincidence that the Vikos Gorge has entered the Guiness Book as the smallest open canyon, just 1,100 meters! Its width is between 30 and 100 meters, while the canyon crosses the Voidomatis River, one of the cleanest rivers in the world, ideal for outdoor activities and mainly rafting!
Following the paths along the gorge, you will find several stone bridges, which are a trademark of the area but also ideal for photographing! The hiking trails of the canyon are 12 km in total, which makes the canyon ideal for hiking through which you will be able to discover the unique beauties of this place.
The Vikos Gorge extends from Monodendri village to Koukouli and Vikos village. Due to the steep slopes, the area remains unexploited to this day, which greatly contributes to the development of rare biodiversity. Specifically, rare species such as roe deer, bear and wild boar live in the canyon. It is also famous for its herbs, which had medicinal properties and were widely used by their respective doctors in ancient times!
In any case, Vikos Canyon is a great spot of ecological beauty. Together with Zagorohoria, they make the place the perfect “hideaway” for those who want to escape the city’s routine, isolate themselves and become one with nature. The alternative tourism offered in the region can hardly be compared to any other part of Greece, perhaps Europe, while showing a different picture of our country, a picture of mountain magic.
If you decide to visit the Vikos Gorge, the summer months are ideal for hiking and rafting. In any case, however, you should have an experienced guide who will guide you to the right places and make sure you enjoy your trip to the fullest.
